The pixel based image composite comprises a global scale raster grid of four spectral bands with a 10-meter spatial resolution. It was created and tiled according to the Universal Transverse Mercator system, with each tile possessing the projection of the UTM zones for which it is representative. There are a total of 615 grid zones with data covering the majority of the mainland and islands. The user has the option to download the data per UTM grid zone by selecting the code of the UTM grid zone. The full dataset has a total volume of 15 TB and is thrown on the Joint Research Centre Big Data platform.

The raster data is stored in 16-bit geotiff format. It is freely available and downloadable from the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission’s Open Data Catalogue. To enable the export and subsequent processing of the composite from pixel GEE, the raster grid by UTM grid zones was sub-titled into small GeoTIFF files of approximately 2 GB average size.

Each subtitle is a four-band image in 16 16-bit unsigned integers. Virtual rasters are built to deal with the various GeoTIFF files in every UTM grid zone. Virtual rasters are XML files that refer to the original GeoTIFF files. They are helpful because they enable dealing with large data sets as one file. Pyramid files at 9 zoom levels are built for every UTM grid zone to accelerate the rendering of the raster data.

Current catalogs of the urban tree population are of pixel value to municipalities to track and enhance the quality of life in cities. While much work has been conducted on automated tree mapping using dedicated airborne LiDAR or hyperspectral surveys, tree species identification and tree detection are, in practice, still largely accomplished manually. In this paper, we introduce an end-to-end automated tree species recognition and detection pipeline that, from publicly accessible aerial and street view imagery of Google Maps TM, can classify thousands of trees in a few hours.

These measurements give us rich information from various perspectives and at varying scales, ranging from global tree forms to bark patterns. Our process is centered around a supervised classification that does automatic learning of the most discriminatory pixel features from thousands of trees and matching, publicly available tree inventory data. Furthermore, we propose a change tracker that is capable of detecting changes in single trees at the city scale and is crucial to ensure an urban tree inventory remains current. The system processes street-level photos of the same tree location at two points in time and categorizes the type of change.

Leveraging recent developments in computer vision and machine learning, we use convolutional neural networks for all classification tasks. We suggest the following pipeline download all panoramas and overhead images of a region of interest, detect trees per image, and merge multi-view detections in a probabilistic setting, incorporating prior knowledge identify fine-grained species of detected trees. In a subsequent, standalone module, follow trees over time, identify important changes, and mark the type of change.

We consider that this is the first paper that leverages openly available image data for city-level street tree detection, species identification, and change monitoring, comprehensively across multiple square kilometers, respectively, of numerous thousands of trees.
